Bump Update: Week 5

Bump Update: Week 5

Week 5 Header

Congratulations! You're pregnant! Whether or not you were expecting this pregnancy, the tell-tale signs and symptoms vary greatly from woman to woman. At this point, some women have no clue they are expecting a little bundle of joy. On the other hand, many may be experiencing the all too common signs of pregnancy: missed period, fatigue, nausea, sore breasts...the list goes on and on. It's such a beautiful time, isn't it? Here's what to expect during week 5 of pregnancy!

Week 5 Info

Alright mama, let's be real here. I will say it so you don't have to–at this point, you are probably starting feel like a steamy pile of poo...or something along those lines. Rest assured, this is a good sign! It means there is a baby growing inside of you! A large amount of hormones are coursing through your body this week, so you should have missed a period by now. If you haven't peed on the stick yet, it's time! Your hCG levels (aka your "holy crap I'm growing a human" hormone) is well on it's way on the upward scale. The purpose of hCG? Basically, hCG supports the corpus luteum which provides nourishment for the embryo until the placenta is in place around week 10. Taking an at-home pregnancy test is recommended at this point because it will detect your high hCG levels in your urine (so lovely, I know)! Once that test reads positive, you have a lot to look forward to!

Week 5 is typically the time that pregnancy symptoms present themselves. For instance, certain foods could start to cause nausea and possibly even make you throw up. This is totally normal! Other symptoms include: tender breasts, extreme fatigue, food cravings (nachos, pickles and ice cream stat!), an increase or a decrease in appetite, and excessive saliva production (by now you should feel very sexy). On top of hCG being present in your body, your other hormones (estrogen and progesterone) increase as well. You may feel their presence in the form of an ungodly amount of mood swings! So exciting! Although I can't promise that all of these symptoms will go away during your second trimester, I can promise that as you focus on the growth of that perfect little human growing inside of you, it will make it easier!

Your Baby Header

At week 5, your baby is known as an embryo. He or she has already developed quite a bit! Your baby is the size of a peppercorn and already has a beating heart made up of two channels called heart tubes. While the anatomy of the heart is not fully developed, it is still working very hard (and can even be seen on an ultrasound)! You see, the rest of the embryo cannot start developing until the circulatory system is underway. The development of the circulatory system is crucial to the development of organs, the nervous and digestive systems and the skeletal system, among many other things!

The embryo's neural tube is developing this week as well. This little tube is very important as it will eventually become your baby's brain and spinal cord. As you can see by the picture shown, your sweet baby resembles a tadpole more than a human. Complete with a preverbal tail! This little embryo has big things in store though! Lots of growth and change is in his or her future!

Tip of the Week Header

It's completely normal for you and your partner to feel excited (and terrified)! Holding in that excitement is a task within itself. Some women choose to wait until 13 weeks to share the good news with family and friends, because risk of miscarriage goes down significantly at that point. However, when you choose to share your excitement with others is up to you and your partner to decide! Happy baby growing, mama!
