December's National Days

December's National Days

December is best known as the month many people celebrate Christmas, but if you're looking for a way to make every day of December special, we've got you covered! Read on to learn which days are dedicated to bathtubs and fruitcakes!

1 Christmas Lights Day

Is there a better way to start off December than taking a drive to take in the glory of the holiday lights?

2 National Mutt Day

National Mutt Day celebrates mixed breed dogs and provides a great opportunity to find a canine companion. What kid wouldn't want a doggy for Christmas? Save a shelter puppy and give a mixed breed dog a home for the holidays.

3 World Trick Shot Day

I have nephews that are absolutely obsessed with trick shot videos on YouTube! Find a trick on YouTube and spend the day trying to master it with your kiddos! They'll get to spend quality time with you and you'll be dubbed "the fun parent"! You can even make a video and share it to social media with the hashtag #WorldTrickShotDay.

4 National Cookie Day

Turn this into another great activity with your little ones! Bake a batch, or two, of cookies and deliver them to your neighbors. Your kids will cherish the time they get to bake with you and yours neighbors will cherish the treats!

5 Bathtub Party Day

Switch up your afternoon routine and let your kids play in the tub after lunch! You could even add some fun new bath toys to make it extra special. Or put the kids to bed early and soak in the suds for some alone time!

6 St. Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas Day celebrates the third-century saint who sold all his possessions and gave his money to the poor. His whole life was dedicated to serving the sick and suffering. Traditionally, St. Nicholas Day is celebrated by leaving small goodies in shoes or stockings. Surprise your kids with a tiny treat in their shoes on December 6th!

7 Cotton Candy Day

Cotton candy: the whimsical whipped sugary treat of my childhood. Did you know its original name was "fairy floss" and that it was invented by dentist?

8 Brownie Day

Another excuse to whip up some sweet treats! Do you really ever need an excuse to make brownies? I think not.

9 Pastry Day

Man, December is really all about delectable goodies! I'm certainly not complaining. Find a local pastry shop in your area and sample something sweet.

10 Dewey Decimal System Day

The Dewey Decimal System was invented by Melvil Dewey and is the most widely used library classification system. Observe this unique holiday by picking out some books to read together from your local library!

11 International Mountain Day

Mountains are some of the most beautiful creations on this earth. If you don't have mountains where you live, create an Everest of couch cushions with your littles and scale your way to the top!

12 Gingerbread House Day

Gather your family together to make and decorate personal gingerbread houses! This has always been a favorite holiday tradition of mine.

13 Violin Day

Create a soundtrack for your day and include as much violin music as possible!

14 Monkey Day

Monkey Day serves as an important day to help bring awareness to our primate pals and the threats they face. Gather up your little monkey's and take a trip to the zoo! Or stay cuddled up on the couch and watch a few episodes of Curious George.

15 Cat Herder's Day

Don't be fooled, this holiday is not actually dedicated to herding cats. The idiom "like herding cats" is used to describe those who can lead and handle life even when it feels uncontrollable. That pretty much sums up parenthood if you ask me.

16 Chocolate Covered Anything Day

I'm totally here for this holiday. My favorite? Chocolate-covered gummy bears. Don't knock it till you try it. This day sounds like the perfect opportunity to whip out my fondue pot and dip all the things into a vat of melted chocolate.

17 Maple Syrup Day

Is there a better way to start the day than with a stack of pancakes and a drizzle of maple syrup? Stay in your jammies with the kids, make some pancakes, and devour a maple-syrup-soaked stack of deliciousness.

18 Answer the Telephone like Buddy the Elf Day

Speaking of maple syrup...
Yes, this is a real day! Buddy the Elf is a character made famous by Will Ferrel in the popular Christmas movie Elf. To celebrate, simply answer any calls with the greeting, "Buddy the Elf, what's your favorite color?"

19 Hard Candy Day

I have a feeling Buddy the Elf would be a big fan of all the sweet treat days celebrated throughout December. Enjoy this day by playing a round or two of Candyland!

20 Ugly Sweater Day

Ah, the ugly sweater. A Christmas staple that apparently has earned it's own day! I'm sure you've heard of a family crest. Get to work creating a ugly family sweater that represents your unique tribe!

21 Crossword Puzzle Day

Crossword puzzles are great for your brain! Create your own Christmas-themed crossword puzzle for your kiddos, or find a printable one online. Spend some time solving puzzles and exercising your brain.

22 Short Person Day

This is a day to celebrate the fact that "great things come in small packages." Use this day to acknowledge all the perks that being short has to offer, even if you are not a short individual yourself! Let the shorties in your life know how much you appreciate them.

23 Roots Day

This day is dedicated to celebrating your genealogy. Each December, my family honors our Italian roots by cooking an Italian feast together. Looks like we need to schedule it for the 23rd every year! What better way to celebrate our heritage!

24 Eggnog Day

Not only is the 24th Christmas Eve, but it turns out it's the day we celebrate eggnog! Are you a fan of this iconic holiday beverage?

25 Merry Christmas!

Use this day to slow down and enjoy time with your loved ones. December is hectic. Soak in the magic and merriment of the season.

26 Thank You Note Day

Spend some time writing thoughtful thank-you's to those who generously gave you a Christmas gift.

27 Fruitcake Day

I can honestly say I've never tried a fruitcake! On December 27th, fruitcake lovers can unite and enjoy a slice of this controversial cake.

28 Call A Friend Day

Our lives can get awfully chaotic, especially around the holidays. Plan some time on this day to reach out and reconnect with an old friend over the phone.

29 Still Need To Do Day

Use this day to check off any tasks you still want to accomplish before the year ends. You'd be surprised by what you can get done in just 24 hours!

30 Bacon Day

Bacon popcorn, bacon soap, Kevin Bacon. The world is obsessed with bacon. I, for one, will have no problem celebrating this day.

31 New Years Eve

Create a new tradition with your family to ring in the new year! My husband and I enjoy playing board games and munching on our favorite snacks until the clock strikes twelve.

Add some extra magic to the holiday season this year by celebrating something new each day!
