How to Choose the Perfect Christening or Blessing Outfit

Pictures of Prince Louis’ christening have been hitting the worldwide web! This special occasion for the royal family has people optimistic because of the reminder of happy things going on across the globe. This young prince happened to wear the same christening gown that his older brother, Prince George, and older sister, Princess Charlotte, wore on their christening days back when they were babies. Seeing and reading about the tradition, elegance, and cherishing aspects of Louis’ christening got me on a christening/blessing outfit kick.

On a little baby’s christening or blessing day, it is pretty obvious that the actual blessing or christening is the main purpose of the day. But, kind of like a wedding, we all know that the outfit matters! Family members typically travel far and wide to attend these occasions, so it’s extra fun to dress a baby up and show off a bit. While these gowns have many backgrounds and styles, they all have one thing in common: a precious baby wearing them on a special day. So, what makes it THE outfit? What makes you want to “say yes to the dress”?

Like Prince Louis, many families decide to have a traveling gown for all members of the family (or a gown for the little ladies and a spiffy outfit for the handsome young gentlemen). My mother kept each of her five children’s outfits and has since passed them down for her grandchildren to wear. While this is often heard of, not all families chose (or succeed) in doing this!

Style

Some parents want all of the glitz and glam, and others are more simplistic when it comes to their baby’s blessing or christening outfit. The time of year should also be taken into account for the type and amount of material used in the gown. White is traditionally worn, but many times you’ll see off-white, cream, gold, or a white shirt and different colored pants. It all depends on what your personal preference is!

I’ve heard of mothers or grandmothers making full gowns out of their wedding dresses, or adding a small amount of their wedding dress material to the gown or as part of the headpiece. Another common occurrence is a piece of jewelry, or special blanket for the occasion.

No matter what decision is made about the outfit of a blessing or christening day, it’s going to end up being infinitely special to you one way or another. Whether it’s brand new or 30 years old, has a gazillion ruffles or lies perfectly flat, was the outfit you always imagined or you ended up skimping on preferences a bit – it’s going to be perfect in your eyes for many years to come! And who knows, maybe one day you’ll get to see your grandchild wearing it too.
