Summer Sun, Summer Fun!

Summer Sun, Summer Fun!

Summer is in full swing at our house, and it has been such a breath of fresh air. After being cooped up all winter, and spending most of the spring in quarantine, my crew was going a bit crazy. We have fully embraced the heat this summer, and are enjoying our days outdoors exploring and playing. It couldn’t be more needed for my soul, and my kids are happier than ever!

By far, our number one activity is going on walks. As simple as that might seem, it’s the easiest way for us to get out. To the park, to our friends' house, around the block, or even to grab mom a Diet Coke, walks have become our primary source of travel these days, and I’m loving it. A major pro tip: have your kids ride or walk along with you. This benefits you two-fold. 1. you won’t have to worry about messing with your stroller or keeping track of it and 2. you will tire out those kiddos! Nothing beats bedtime with a kid who’s worn out and ready for sleep!

We love having our kids ride along or walk with us. A balance bike does the trick for our older daughter, and the Doona Midnight Liki Trike is a perfect fit for our toddler. She can even recline back while I push her with the parent control bar. It’s also shaded, for those hot mid-day walks, so I don’t have to worry about the sun beating down on her. It’s a winner in my book, and makes daily walks even more manageable!

We have also been loving water activities. For us, it’s a kiddie pool in the backyard, or the sprinkler set up under the trampoline. We load up on sunscreen, and popsicles, and get all the bath and beach toys out. I’m always so impressed by the creativity that ensues, and how much time my kids can be occupied by just the one activity. Whatever your water activity of choice is, it will be sure to cool your kids down and lift up their spirits.

Before having kids, my husband and I were, what I considered, very outdoorsy. But after our first, it seemed a bit daunting to get back into the mountains. We started out slow, going mostly on natural trails and river walks, and our kids ate it up! The Doona Midnight Liki Trike would make it so easy for your kids to ride along. It folds up super compact so it’s easy to pack along, and can convert from Push Mode to Trike Mode, to Bike Mode, making it suitable for whatever stage you're in. Having our kids ride along on these easy hikes, was a gamer changer for us, and got them excited to get out in nature!

We’ve now graduated to much more traditional hikes, scouting up to lakes or viewpoints that are usually enjoyable the whole way. As long as we pack enough water bottles and snacks, our kids could spend hours throwing rocks in the river, jumping off boulders, or picking wildflowers. It may take a bit longer than it used to, but it's so good to get that fresh mountain air again!

The summer heat has scared me indoors in years past. But, when winter months are back in full force, I’ll be wishing for more park dates and pool plunges, so I’m taking advantage of it this year. Summer memories are some of the hardest to beat, and we’ve been building some sweet ones this year.  Here’s to more sweaty smiles, messy hair days, fresh air, and fun in the sun!
