Two to Kiss, Two to Love: Why Twins are the Best

Two to Kiss, Two to Love: Why Twins are the Best

PC: @whitjohns

When I found out I was pregnant with my twins, I was SOOOO excited; like a-little-kid-on-Christmas-morning excited. No, no...way more than that! Just over-the-top thrilled. The ultrasound tech thought I was insane to be so excited. Ya know... two newborns at once. That IS a lot to handle. Then she found out I already had a 14.5-month-old daughter, laughed a minute, and said, "good luck." But I was still beyond stoked! I had wanted twins my entire life, and my dream was coming true. I was so lucky.

However, not every twin mama has the same experience as me. Some twin mamas, maybe even you, aren't as thrilled at the news of two babies. You may have had anxiety, and felt that this was horrible news. How on earth would you take care of two babies at once?! Let alone, how are you going to buy all you need for twins? But now that you have your twins...? They're the best, right? I mean, literally the best ever. I had a friend who would say that moms of singletons truly don't understand how it is to have two babies at once. She was always comparing herself to moms of singletons, and realized she had to stop because twins were different. For her, having twins was harder, and those moms just didn't understand. But you know what moms of singletons are really missing out on? The experience of having twins. I watch my twins in amazement all the time, and wish I could have a twin myself. So, what's so great about them?

They always have each other

My twins sleep from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., and sometimes longer. And sometimes... okay, let's be honest, all the time...when I'm just not ready to wake up for the day because I stayed up WAY too late having my own "me time," I will stay in bed longer than them. And you know what they do instead of crying? They chat FOREVER. I'll hear them in their room making up some stories in their baby babble, and explaining who-knows-what to each other. If I look in their monitor, they are often passing their animals and blankets back and forth through the crib slats. Two weeks ago, we were visiting my mother-in-law in Utah, and the twins were supposed to be taking their naps (they take one two-hour nap each day), but I kept just hearing them talk to each other. I went in, and immediately knew they had pooped. I fixed that issue and put them back to bed. But they still didn't go to sleep. I was dumbfounded. What the heck were they doing? So I opened the door slowly, and found this...
They were hugging! OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Oh, my heart. It was the cutest thing ever. The twin on the right would go back in for the next hug, and the left twin would scoot in and hug her tight. It was adorable. I tried to sneak my phone through the opening to take a video, but my one twin caught me so I only got a video of them hugging once.

Built-in Playmate

Twins rock because you don't have to find friends for them to play with. My girls were at my mom's yesterday, and they climbed up into this rocking chair. Then, trying to help each other, they started rocking the chair back and forth. Once it started going, they kept taking breaks from the hard work of rocking, and one would do it all, then switch. Seriously? They are the best.

They feel for each other

My twins feel everything the other one feels. One cries, the other one runs to comfort her. When my twins were a bit younger, one of my twins, Colette, was messing with the breathing monitor under her crib. I immediately told her, "no touch." She looked at me, looked back at the monitor, smiled, and touched it again. More sternly I said, "no touch." She looked at me, looked back at the monitor, smiled, and touched it again. This time, I said, "NO!" She stared at me. Her lower lip grew 1,000 times, and she started bawling. Her twin, Delilah, saw her crying, and now Delilah's lower lip started growing. I said to Delilah, "no, no, it's fine, Colette can't touch that, you don't need to cry." It didn't matter...sister was upset. When Colette realized that Delilah was now visibly upset because of something Colette had done, she immediately stopped throwing her tantrum, crawled over to Delilah, and gave her a big hug. AWWWWWWWWWW!!!!

There are a million more reasons twins are sincerely THE BEST. If you have twins, you're so entirely blessed. Don't forget it, and go squeeze those kiddos tight, you lucky mama!
